“Catch It, Keep It”

July 28, 2009 | Filed Under Business | No Comments

As if our green “Skate All Cities” spellout for VIMBY that we did back around December 08 didn’t get enough play and coverage on the internet already (186,527 views & counting); it also appeared on an LA fixed gear freestyle video entitled “VIDEOMARKET” as well as this tv gameshow called “Catch It Keep It” that can be seen over HERE.  (Just check out the :55 second mark.)

The Science Channel on Discovery recently created a new tv gameshow series entitled “Catch It Keep It” whom they pick out “three contestants who test their scientific and engineering mettle against Science Channel’s “engineer of destruction,” Mike Senese, who devises dastardly schemes uniquely designed to obliterate the prize of the week.” From what I can see it looks like they filmed their whole first season in the same lot (You know, the same one that LAKAI filmed their intro to Fully Flared?) that we did our spellout in LA and you can catch glimpses of it throughout each and every episode!    So if you ever want a reminder of how our green “Skate All Cities” spellout looks like (Since it’s no longer there.) then you should watch “Catch It Keep It” every Friday night at 10pm on the Discovery channel!  Keep it movin…

LeBASSE Projects presents: “A Distored Lens” w/ David Flores & Lisa Alisa

July 25, 2009 | Filed Under Events, Lifestyle | No Comments

Upcoming, future board collaborator David Flores (more on that later) invited us to his joint artshow with Lisa Alisa this past weekend over at LeBASSE Projects in Culver City. No entrance fee with free beer and cool vibes made this show a cool spot to visit and chill. After SAMOHI we definitely needed to grab some drinks, especially after Stevie B dislocated his fingers.

For all of those who have been living in a cave and don’t know who David Flores is then you probably still live at home and are currently stealing your neighbor’s internet or cable.  David has pumped out more skateboard graphics in this lifetime, than you have updated your Twitter status.  Some of his clientele ranges from SHORTY’s, REAL, THINK, Plan B and more.  About a year ago he did a collabo with Matt Groening (The Simpsons) and Vans to create a series of shoes that sold for an average of about $500-$1,000.  In between his busy monthly flights from California to Hong Kong, he knew about Skate All Cities and was down for the movement and what we are bringing to the table.

We saw Noe Flores and Yoskay Yamamoto there as well.

Santa Monica High School – Santa Monica, CA

July 24, 2009 | Filed Under Skateboarding, SpotCheck | No Comments

This past weekend after skating the Santa Clarita Skatepark, we stopped by the famous Santa Monica High School aka “SAMOHI” for short.  If you haven’t been there before then I’m absolutely (actually positively) sure that you’ve seen this school at least once in your favorite skateboarding videos.  SAMOHI has the blue fountain gap that everyone skates as well as the huge 14 stair rail that everyone jumps down.

Blue Fountain Gap

Right as we arrived at the spot, we already saw a bunch of kids tossing their carcasses down that thing with Nollies, 180’s and even some with flips.

Frontside 180

Backside 180

This got Riley & Steve a little hyped to jump down the gap themselves.

Riley, “You go first.”  Steve, “Nah, you go first.”

But before that our legs were a little soggy from driving around in LA traffic and needed some warming up, so Steve opted to skate the curbs located on the top of the stadium for a little bit.

In A Bit…

After warming up and trying a Backside 5-0 and slipping out on the overwaxed curb Steve dislocated 3 of his fingers on his right hand.  I repeat, “3 fingers”!  (OUCH times three.)  In the mix of the pain & confusion, Riley decided to take off his wife beater and donate his lighter so Dr. Oct can wrap up Steve’s fingers in a ghetto-made splint.

Painful

Needless to say after that, we were all kinda burnt on the spot and decided to spectate instead.

You can’t tell from the picture (because I’m the illest photographer ever), but this kid did a Nollie Flip down the Blue Fountain Gap, FIRST TRY.

First Try Nollie Flip Saturdays

These were the ledges that Steve slipped and ate shit on.  Throughout the whole stadium there are bunch of these stepped-up and regular for sliding and grinding.

Dr. Oct – Frontside Tailslide

As if things couldn’t get worse, this guy popped out of nowhere and said, “NO SKATEBOARDING!”  WEAKSAUCE…

“Mrs. Officer don’t you wish your name was Mrs. Carter huh…”  (NO HOMO)

Slide And Cracklepop

Even though SAMOHI is famous for the 14 stair and the Blue Fountain Gap there are a shitload of other spots to skate within the school.  Like this 2 stair with a couple blue step-out ledges sticking out from both sides.

Blue Step-Out Ledge

On top of that they have about every hammer dropping, 8+ stair, handrails scattered throughout the area.

This spot might look slightly familiar to you since not alot of people skate it, but I was told that Mike Taylor did a Frontside Overcrooks on the first rail recently?  Shit is HIGH.

TRADITION presents “OFF THE WALL”

July 23, 2009 | Filed Under Events | No Comments

TRADITION pops off with another artshow/event tomorrow with a tribute to Michael Jackson entitled “Off The Wall”.   One of the homeys “Tommy Ruets” (who’s responsible for dropping this t-shirt right HERE) will have some new works for display along with a variety of other artists.  I’m pretty impressed with what the TRADITION dudes have been bringing to the table lately.  Rather than just being the “cool” boutique that sells all of your popular brands, these guys actually give back to the community and throw events like these for FREE.  *Cough*  Other shops should take notes…

Sk8parkAtlas.com

Our good friend Nick Witten from Michigan recently launched a website called “Sk8parkAtlas.com“.  Sk8parkAtlas is the one stop shop website where you can find photos, information, write-ups and even hours of operation for skateparks throughout the United States.  They currently have a database covering the states of California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and are in the middle of adding more states every day.  Make sure to stop by and check it out sometime.
